GOT A GPF ERROR IN TOOLBOOK? DON'T REBOOT!

After getting a GPF error in ToolBook, you may think that you have to reboot your machine to ensure ToolBook will operate correctly, rather than just re-opening your project. I tend to want to toss the computer out the window, but we all handle GPFs in our own ways.

Although this is true of Windows 95 and 98, any NT based Windows Operating System such as NT, 2000, and XP do not require a reboot. As long as you completely terminate ToolBook from the Windows memory, ToolBook will typically restart without issue.

How do you terminate ToolBook from memory on an NT based Operating System?

  • After the GPF error occurs press CTRL-ALT-Delete once to open the Windows Task Manager.

  • Click on the Processes TAB and select the NTVDM.EXE process, then click End Process button. The other child processes indented (shown in red below) live in this NTVDM process and when the NTVDM process ends, so will the child processes.

  • Click on the TB85MAIN.EXE process (if it exists), then click the End Process button.

  • Note that the 85 in the files names as shown below are there only because I used ToolBook 8.5 in my example. You will see other numbers depending on which version of ToolBook you are using.

That's it. ToolBook has been cleared from active memory, and you should be able to reopen your project without worry of the previous crash causing trouble.
