WHY ARE THERE SO MANY DIFFERENT FILE EXTENSIONS?

If you have been using ToolBook for a while you might have noticed that there are lots of supporting files installed on your Authoring machine which make ToolBook function as it does. Below is a list of the various file types which you will run across and what they are for.

  • EXE
    A ToolBook file saved as an EXE file.

  • TBK
    A regular ToolBook file. Template files are also saved with a .TBK extension, which means that a Template file for ToolBook is just an ordinary ToolBook file.

  • SBK
    A ToolBook file designed for use as a
    System Book.

  • PTP
    A ToolBook file configured for use as a STYLE for use in the Book Specialist. Typically located in the
    \spclst\styles\ directory.

  • SPB
    A ToolBook file designed for use as a Extended Object Properties Editor.

  • WBK
    ToolBook files containing Catalog category objects.

  • WBX
    ToolBook files containing Catalog category object icons. This file is generated automatically by the Category Import process.

  • INI
    Standard Windows INI files used by various routines in ToolBook.

  • LOG
    Raw text file containing data intended for use as a Log of activities. Various routines in ToolBook generate a Log file.

  • AXF
    A file containing raw text in an XML format used to describe a ToolBook file. Used during the Export to Web (DHTML) process.

  • AOF
    INI file containing Outline information for use with the Book Specialists. Typically located in the
    \spclst\styles\outlines\ directory.

  • BAK
    The new backup feature in ToolBook creates 1 or more backups of your book as you Save your book. The most recent backup will always be named with a BAK extension.

  • 001 - 008
    The new backup feature in ToolBook creates 1 or more backups of your book as you Save your book. The .001 - .008 extensions are used to signify the 2nd, 3rd, etc. backups of the file being saved.
