WHY YOU SHOULD USE THE VERSION UPDATER

The Version Updater utility has been available for each version of ToolBook, although previous to ToolBook 8 it was known as the Script Walker, which seems like a strange name for a utility that updates older ToolBook files to your current version.

Version Updater is probably a more meaningful name for this utility because it is immediately understood what it does, but Script Walker is not really a bad name either because in reality it describes what it does.

Truth be told, technically speaking - to get an older ToolBook file to open and run in your current version of ToolBook, all you really need to do it open it in your newer version of ToolBook and save it. Tada. Trying this however may prove to be problematic if your book thinks it needs access to some of the older version engine files.

For example if your older book was configured to use the TB70R.SBK, the TB70ANM.SBK or TB70HYP.SBK, trying to open this 7.0 book in 8.6 will likely produce some error about "sorry, can't find TB70ANM.SBK...do you wish to remove it?"

One of the main jobs of the Version Updater it to ensure that any references in your book which referred to older ToolBook version files, are updated to the newer file names like TB86HYP.SBK, preventing the "do you wish to remove..." error from appearing.

One of the other tasks the Version Updater does, is to force all the OpenScript in your book to recompile so that it is optimized for the current OpenScript compiler. Optimized code runs faster in ToolBook - so this is definitely an advantage in itself.

To find the Version Updater, look in your Windows Start menu under:

Start | Programs | ToolBook | Utilities 86 | Version Updater
